BIG CHANGES AT SILVER LAKE FOR 2012

Silver Lake Country Club, a south suburban public golf mainstay for over 80 years, has undertaken several major changes for the 2012 golf season.  The 45 hole Orland Park facility has added a driving range by shortening the 9th hole on the North course from a difficult 470 yard par 4 to a still challenging 214 yard par 3.  The course will now play to a par 71 at just under 6,600 yards.

In addition to the practice facility, Silver Lake is also updating the majority of the greenside sand traps and several of the fairway bunkers to improve drainage.  But arguably the biggest difference golfers will see in 2012 is a standard 9 minute tee time interval for all weekend play, up from the previous  7 & 8 minute times.  For a facility that has been burdened by slow play in the past, this will be a significant and welcome change for south side golfers.

"We're really putting an emphasis on the customer experience, and we think that the range, trap renovations and expanded tee time intervals will do just that" stated Jeff Carr of the Silver Lake Golf Operations staff.  With the recent shift from blue grass to bent grass fairways on the South course, the changes for 2012 are indicative of Silver Lake's commitment to upgrading their facility.  Discounted spring rates will be in effect until April 6th, the perfect time to check out the new look at Silver Lake.

  1. Thank you for the nice comments. We're really looking to emphasize the customer experience in 2012 and beyond, and making the changes you highlighted are the key factors.

  2. Sucks that they butchered the 9th hole. That WAS one of the better holes on the course, in addition to holes 10 and 11. I used to play here all the time and the 9th was a favorite. Guess I won't be playing here much anymore, or will just hit the south course instead.

I am a life long Chicagoan and an avid golfer (or as much as my wife will let me!). And I am also a closet journalist who needed an outlet, so I decided to write reviews of the golf courses that I've played over the years in Chicago. Plus I've added detailed information on each course to help my fellow public golfers find the ones that best fits their skill level and budgets. So, read the reviews and use the comments to either give me a big "thumbs up" or tell me I'm full of crap, check out the courses and other pages, and let me know what you think... Mr Z
